FARGO – Fargo will soon be home to the region’s first Instagram selfie studio.

Fargo’s Selfie WRLD is slated to open Jan. 15 at 630 1st Ave. N. in downtown Fargo. Once opened, the business will feature 30 different backgrounds designed for use by professional photographers and Instagram-loving amateurs.

The DIY photo studio is owned by Kim Collins, Robbin Taves, and Jill Boor.

The Selfie WRLD franchise was started by Collins’ friend Ashley Wilkerson.

Wilkerson explained the inspiration for Selfie WRLD in a 2020 video shared on social media.

The mother of two and former photographer explained that a few years ago she was diagnosed with cancer that had spread to her lymph nodes. After chemotherapy and radiation therapy, she decided to buy a house near her parents.

“Earlier this year, when COVID hit, I had no choice but to sell this house,” she said. “But with no job, 40s, and a little money to sell my house, I got the idea of starting a photography studio that anyone could use.”

Its first location, then known as Selfie Studio, opened in Des Moines, Iowa, in June 2020. After a TikTok video about the location went viral, Wilkerson decided to franchise the concept.

Today there are over 30 Selfie WRLDs across the United States.

Photo sessions are available in hourly increments. During this time, customers will have access to 30 different background scenes. Groups will receive a ring light and the option to purchase a remote selector for $ 3.

Changing rooms will be available for those who wish to change their outfit to suit certain settings.

Collins and Taves believe the uses for Selfie WRLD are endless: photos of seniors, prom, bachelorette parties, bridal showers, birthdays, dates and more.

“We’ve already booked a few bridal showers and we’re not even open yet,” Collins said. “People are looking for a destination for entertainment where they can do something fun and different. “

Fargo Selfie WRLD will be closed to the public on Mondays and Tuesdays.

“We will use these days not only to upgrade the stands for the week, but we will also be hosting private events,” she said. “Photographers in the region can rent spaces for their clients as many of them no longer have their brick and mortar space. In the last couple of years that has changed a lot, so we’ll have a place where they can bring their customers.
