Professor Chovan-Calton remarked: “The JKC Gallery has another great pairing of two photographers who document humanity and the world around them in very distinct ways. We look forward to welcoming Krista Svalbonas and Eddie Einbender-Luks.

About the artists

Krista Svalbonas credits her ethnic Latvian/Lithuanian cultural background to her lifelong interest in architecture, particularly urban environments.

Svalbonas explained, “My parents spent many years after the end of World War II in displaced persons camps in Germany before being allowed to emigrate to the United States. Their childhood memories were temporary structures, diverted from other (often military) uses to house tens of thousands of post-war refugees. I am fascinated by the language of spatial relationships and the effect of architectural form and structure on the psychology of the human environment. My connection to this history made me very aware of the impact of politics on architecture and, therefore, on the daily experience of a people.

Eddie Einbender-Luks entered his life as a photographer using a small 35mm film camera. His camera and the analog process presented him with a new way of looking at the world. His photos strive to reflect our collective humanity to us and show us the strength of the human family.

Einbender-Luks sees photography from concept to final print as “an expression of joy as well as a way to revisit moments distilled in time.”

Einbender-Luks explores everyday life and human emotions. In his third thursdays presentation, Eddie will explore early analog work made in Philadelphia that helped shape his photographic sense, highlighting his time spent with a Cuban-Haitian folk troupe and the joy they experience through music and a parade, and his recent trip in Ukraine to visit a friend who lived in kyiv.
