marvel’s latest streaming show moon knight only lasts six episodes, and while everyone is expecting the character to show up and take on the likes of Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Ant-Man, and Spidermanthere is no guarantee that this will happen.

In a profile of Variety, moon knight star oscar isaac revealed that unlike many actors who helped start the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he doesn’t have a long-term contract in place to continue to appear in films or shows. “I had heard of the gold handcuffs,” Isaac told the trade (with what is described as “a nervous chuckle”.) “It was something I was reluctant to do. And luckily we all agreed that it [show] is what we are going to focus on. It’s history. And if there is a future, I think it depends on whether people like it, whether people want to see more of it, and whether we find a story worth telling.

Reading between the lines, it’s not that Isaac doesn’t want to come back for more projects in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, nor does this quote guarantee that it hasn’t already been planned. Plus, let’s be honest, it almost certainly will. It’s just the recognition that when the star wars star signed up for moon knighthe did it on his own terms.

“I was in a position…because I wasn’t actively looking to get back into something that big—youo say, “That’s how I see it, and if you don’t see it that way, that’s totally fine, but then maybe that’s not the right solution”, has said Isaac. “And so I wasn’t afraid of doing the wrong thing.”

Somehow, this news seems almost expected. Maybe it’s me but there was always something a little weird about Oscar Isaac playing moon knight. Certainly, he is a talented and bankable actor more than able to handle the role, but after seeing him play in star wars, a Disney+ show has always seemed like a place almost too small for it to make a big Marvel splash. Other big stars are joining the universe—names like Cate Blanchett or Kurt Russell come to mind—did it in a movie and came out after one. Isaac has this kind of feeling about him, and now, if marvel wants to continue, that’s fine may need to do so on a case-by-case basis.
