If you’re looking for something fun to do in the Elgin area or a new hobby, head to Side Street Studio Art in downtown Elgin.

Freddy Lagunes, an employee of Side Street Studio Art, led an origami workshop on November 6. Lagunes demonstrated several techniques with the participants, including the “hand” and “arm” techniques and how to make an origami dragon.

“I love sharing knowledge about origami because it has a culture and a science,” Lagunes said. “You could say that there is a bit of magic [in] to be able to do something with a simple sheet of paper [that] people can really appreciate.

“I’ve probably done something like this in the past, but nothing quite so ornate,” said contestant Melissa Routzahn.

“It’s my first time,” said contestant Faith Lill.

Lagunes, who started making origami in first grade, has been doing so for more than two decades. He says he doesn’t get exhausted because it’s a relaxing activity for him.

“There’s an endless amount of tricks you can do; each of them is unique in its own way,” he said.

Side Street Studio, which was founded in 2013, is an outlet for artists from Elgin to showcase their work. Their instagram announces educational workshops and seminars for anyone looking for something new to try.
