ATLANTA – Martín Maldonado’s future is a little more secure.

The two-year contract extension Maldonado signed in the 2021 season contained a $4.5 million club option for the 2023 season that would vest if Maldonado played 90 games in 2022.

The veteran receiver played his 90th Sunday against the Braves at Truist Park, securing his return to Houston next season.

Barring an offseason acquisition, Maldonado is expected to enter spring training as Houston’s daily starter. The Astros acquired Christian Vázquez at the trade deadline to partner Maldonado for the final two months of the season. Vázquez is expected to be a free agent after the season.

If the Astros don’t make any outside additions at receiver, Maldonado could face a challenge from prospects Korey Lee and Yainer Diaz. Maldonado spoke fondly of Lee during his brief major league cameo last month, in which Maldonado mentored the top prospect.
