The Falcons have officially signed their 2022 draft as rookies report to training camp. Third-round pick Desmond Ridder and the team have agreed to terms on a four-year contract worth more than $5 million.

Falcons hold quarterback competition at Flowery Branch between rookie and veteran Marcus Mariota. As it stands, the former No. 2 overall pick must be the favorite to be the team’s starting quarterback in Week 1, but reports suggest the Cincy product will make things interesting at camp. training.

“He’s light years ahead of most other young quarterbacks from the neck down,” Arthur Smith said of Ridder. “I’ll give him that compliment.”

Ridder just doesn’t have normal difficulties for beginners.

“Honestly, I’m not going to lie, I thought I was going to come in and struggle a bit,” Ridder said. “We have almost completed all our installations and implemented all these checks. I have a good idea. That kind of surprised me, honestly, you know? I’m not going to say I wouldn’t have picked it up, but I thought it would just take me a little longer, a few more days. But I managed to find my way around quite easily. »

One of the most important characteristics of being a quarterback in this league is commanding a large group of grown men, which can be difficult for a young player like Ridder. It looks like that’s not going to be a problem, though.

“Guys gravitate towards him,” Charles London said. “He’s a natural leader, and leadership is difficult. It’s hard to judge someone’s leadership. People can tell you he’s a leader, but most guys who are really great leaders, they lead in their own style, in their own way.
