The Falcons could be added to the roster in the coming days. Field Yates reported that the team had adjusted Deion Jones contract and created $6.8 million of ceiling space.

Essentially, $6.8 million of Deion Jones’ 2022 cap is pushed into the future, creating enough cap space for the Falcons to add a player to the roster. The Falcons definitely need help along the defensive line, which I suspect they would target.

Let’s rewatch the Saints game to make more sense of this need. After the Falcons went up two scores, Dean Pees deployed a defensive line consisting of Ade Ogundeji, Matt Dickerson, Anthony Rush, Timmy Horneand Quinton Bell. Atlanta knew the New Orleans offense would pull, trying to get back into the game on the passing game. And the Falcons sent a run-packed defensive end and two tackles to the nose. Four games later, the Saints score.

The lack of depth along the defensive front is evident, and this decision to create cap space could be a precursor to signing a free agent defensive lineman. There is a second possibility, however. The move makes Debo a bit more attractive to prospect teams looking for a linebacker. If traded, the dead money hit is around $11 million in 2022 and 2023.
