Seattle Refined: How long have you been creating? What mediums do you work with?

Janine Harles: I’ve been doing photography for over 15 years. I am self-taught and mainly use digital.

Can you tell us about your artistic approach and how the different stages fit into it?

I look for different, fun and stimulating photographic moments.

Tell us where your inspiration for your art comes from.

Having lived in Edmonds for 55 years, I have a love for the town and spend a lot of time capturing it.

Do you have a specific “rhythm” that you prefer – nature, food, profiles, etc. ?

I love photographing wildlife, birds, landscapes, festivals, bands and Edmonds.

Do you have a work of art that means more to you or is extremely special to you?

I love whales and birds, but I really have a hard time choosing a favorite photo. Some of my favorites are quirky bird photos that really show off their personality.

What experiences in your life have influenced your art the most?

One thing I’ve discovered over the years I’ve done this is that animals and birds have a curiosity for us just as we do for them. I spend a lot of time on my own boat and on whale watching boats and have had amazing encounters with whales, especially gray whales and humpback whales. Many of these encounters happen right here in Puget Sound!

My goal with photography is to show the people, places, and wildlife that are literally in our backyard, so to speak. So many people wander through local parks and waterfronts, and they don’t realize how much wildlife surrounds them.

Photography taught me patience. Waiting for that perfect moment to capture with my camera! It’s a fun hobby that has taken me to some pretty cool places and helped me meet some amazing photographers! I am always learning new things about photography.

What’s next for you? Something you’re working on right now that you’re really passionate about?

I’m a contract photographer for the City of Edmonds and I also shoot for local newspapers.

If we want to see more of your work, where should we go to find it?

To view my work I have a website at Janine-harles.pixels.com or my Instagram @janineharles.

Finally, how do you drink your coffee? (We ask everyone!)

I don’t drink coffee, but I drink a lot of black, iced and hot tea!
